Professor David Hand marks his 65th birthday this year. His illustrious career has included periods at the Institute of Psychiatry, The Open University, Imperial College London, and Winton Capital. He retains senior research investigator status in the Mathematics department at Imperial, contributing both to the Statistics section and the wider College community.

His research has delivered contributions in classification, data mining, credit scoring and the interface between computing and statistics. His contributions have been recognised by such prizes as the RSS Guy medal in Silver and the IEEE-ICDM Outstanding Contribution award. David is a Fellow of the British Academy. Notably, David is author or editor of 28 books, including two popular science volumes.

In addition to research, David has contributed extensively to both the statistical and wider communities, including the presidency of the Royal Statistical Society, presidency of the International Federation of Classification Societies, service for the Institute of Actuaries, and chairing the UK Administrative Data Research Network. Such contributions were recognised with the award of an OBE in 2013.

David's birthday provides a fine opportunity to celebrate his achievements and contributions. This one-day conference consists of invited talks by David's colleagues and peers, touching on topical issues in statistics.
