Prof Francesca Cordeiro wins the Duke Elder Award from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists

Royal College of Ophthalmologists 2019 Annual Congress.

Congratulations to Prof Francesca Cordeiro, who received the prestigious Duke Elder Award from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists at the their 2019 annual congress.

This is the first time the award has been given to an Imperial / Western Eye Hospital ophthalmologist since its inception in 1978.

This bi-annual award recognises excellence in ophthalmology research in the UK and is awarded at the middle stage of their career and is in the honour of the most famous British ophthalmologist Sir Stewart Duke-Elder.

Prof Cordeiro emphasised the hard work of her teams and support from the Welcome Trust in her lecture describing the revolutionary DARC technology, its development and translation.

The ICORG unit at the Western Eye Hospital  has been key in allowing this and other technologies to pass through early clinical trials, the focus of which is prevention of any type of visual loss.
