Opportunity for PhD students at The Alan Turing Institute (deadline: 21 Jan)

The Alan Turing Institute Enrichment scheme is now open for applications and offers students enrolled on a doctoral programme at a UK university an opportunity to boost their research project with a placement at the Turing for up to 12 months.

Enrichment places are offered for 6, 9, or 12 months with start dates in October 2020 and January 2021 on a full or part time basis. Places are based at the Institute headquarters at the British Library in London where students will continue their PhD with their current supervisor, while enriching their research and making new collaborations.

Enrichment students may be eligible for a stipend top up of up to £7,000 (exact maximum to be confirmed) and/or a travel allowance.

We welcome students from a broad range of academic disciplines with a strong research interest in data science or AI.

EPSRC Focus Group – women scientists, engineers and mathematicians in university spinout companies

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) would like to invite women scientists, engineers and mathematicians to take part in one of two focus groups at Imperial. The interactive focus groups will be part of a research project funded by the EPSRC under its ‘Inclusion Matter’ programme.

The overall aim of this project is to achieve a step change in institutional capabilities to increase the participation of women scientists, engineers and mathematicians in university spinout companies.

They are interested to hear your thoughts on your current research work and career trajectory as well as understanding your awareness of the enterprising possibilities available to you at your institution. The session will adopt the format of an interactive workshop where you can learn and reflect about the process of spinning out your research.

Please note the sessions are the same, just being held twice.

You will be asked to sign a consent form and with your expressed permission the focus-group will be audio-recorded and analysed by researchers from the Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice at Oxford Brookes University. If you wish to withdraw from the study you are free to do so at any time and do not need to give any reasons for doing so.

Applications open for Venture Catalyst Challenge (deadline: 19 Jan)

The Venture Catalyst Challenge enables Imperial students and alumni, within three years of graduation, to develop an innovative idea for commercialisation. Open to all students from all faculties and levels of study, the programme includes five tracks (Health and Wellbeing; Software, Robotics and AI; Creative and Consumer; Digital Consumer and Fintech; and Energy and Environment) plus a Social Impact and Moonshot prize.

Applications close at midnight on Sunday 19 January 2020.

Merck Innovation Cup 2020 – 10th Anniversary

From June 20 – 26, 2020, Merck will be hosting the 10th Anniversary Innovation Cup Summer Camp (http://innovationcup.merckgroup.com) near Frankfurt, Germany, and we are inviting post-graduate students and young professionals from you organization to apply now – deadline January 31st, 2020.

The Innovation Cup is an initiative for post-graduate students and young professionals in natural sciences, computer sciences, and business administration to attend a training program near Frankfurt, Germany. All travel, food and accommodation expenses are paid by Merck. The Innovation Cup is designed to support the professional development of post-graduate students interested in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Participants learn how R&D in the industry works by lectures from Merck managers and scientists. The students will also advance an idea to a full project plan with their teams. The event brings together a promising new generation of talent with senior managers and researchers and accomplished retirees in a meeting of the generations. It also provides a unique chance to network with the brightest students from all around the world. Teams will work on innovative projects in the areas of: Oncology, Immuno-Oncology, Autoimmunity, Drug Discovery Technologies, Digitalization, Electroceuticals and Lithography. At the first day of the summer camp a conference with alumni from previous editions of the Innovation Cup will be organized.

Postdocs and post-graduate students on their way towards a PhD in biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, biotechnology, bioinformatics, computer sciences, data sciences, informatics, biochemistry, pharmacy, engineering or related fields are invited to apply. In addition, advanced MBA students or recent MBA graduates with an interest in the pharmaceutical and chemical business and a background in natural sciences are also eligible.

The participating teams have the chance to win the Innovation Cup award endowed with EUR 20,000 for the most convincing project plan, plus EUR 5,000 for the runner-up.
