Morning session theme: Science Communication

9.30 – Coffee and breakfast

10 – 10:45 – Gareth Mitchell; Talk Title: “Good Science Communication: How and Why?”

10:45 – 11:30 – Dr Shini Somara; talk on her experience as a science journalist and how to tailor media towards different audiences. Talk title: “Visualising the invisible”

11:30 – 11:45 – Brief introduction by Amelia Perry, Big Bang Fair competitions manager, and Emily Xu, GSK Young Scientist of the Year 2018 and Big Bang Fair winner 2018, on The Big Bang Fair science competition and how researchers can get involved in judging children’s science competitions.

11:45 – 12:30 – Panel discussion with all previous speakers + Dr Jess Wade, on the topic “Hurdles: making the jump from research to communication”

12:30 – Lunch:

13:00 – 14:30. “Racing extinction” film showing

Afternoon session: Climate Change and Science Policy

17:00- 17:30 Tea and Cake

17:30 – 18:00 – Sir Norman Lamb, MP

18:00 – 18:30 – Sigourney Luz from the IPCC, talk on her role as Communications Manager for IPCC WGIII

18:30 –19.00 Wine, cheese and snacks break + informal Q&A / Networking with speakers

19:00 – 20:00 – Dan Page, BBC sitcom writer and podcast producer; workshop on how to write comedy for science

20:00 – event closure
