Student Challenges Competition

Do you have an innovative idea to improve global health? The Institute of Global Health Innovation’s annual Student Challenges Competition could help transform that idea into reality.

Our Student Challenges Competition is now open for entries to all university students based in the UK and offers the opportunity to win funding towards the implementation of a global health innovation. Applications close on 8 February 2018.

Innovation in Healthcare summit

Around 200 people attended or watched the live stream of our Innovation in Healthcare summit, hosted on Monday 11 December 2017 at the RHS Lindley Hall in London. The event was hosted in partnership with the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), Imperial College Health Partners and Imperial College’s Institute of Global Health Innovation (IGHI).

World Innovation Summit for Health announces dates of 2018 conference

WISH 2018 will take place once again at the Qatar National Convention Centre from November 13th and 14th, 2018.

For the fourth time, WISH, an initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) with support from Imperial’s Institute of Global Health Innovation, will convene its meeting of global leaders, policy-makers, and innovators in healthcare, charging them with exploring new ways to build a healthier world through collaborative efforts and the sharing of novel ideas.

Early Diagnosis of Lung Cancer: a Pathologist’s Perspective

The 9th edition of the renowned Osler’s Textbook on the Principles and Practice of Medicine, published in 1921, dedicated only two (out of 1,139) pages to lung cancer, at which point the condition was described as “New Growths in the Lungs”. Almost a hundred years on, the patterns of epidemiology have shifted drastically, and lung cancer now is recognised as a major health problem globally with more than 1.8 million new cases diagnosed every year.

Ending stigma and HIV transmission

It is estimated that there are 36.7 million people living with HIV globally with 1.8 million new infections in 2016 alone (1). This number represents an 11% drop in the number of new infections from 2010 . Some might consider this an achievement or a testament to the impact of strategic national and global policies aimed at tackling the epidemic. But in reality, these numbers mask the discrepant pace in the effort to tackle transmission and AIDS-related deaths in countries across the globe.
