Geometric Invariant Theory
Richard Thomas.
GIT is a method to take quotients in algebraic geometry. That sounds dry and technical, but it turns out to lead to some beautiful geometry, a notion of stability (that has become ubiquitous in geometry), and a way to solve certain equations (moment map equations) that you'll see next week in the closely related "symplectic reduction" lecture.
