All programmes at Imperial College Business School are linguistically demanding, and therefore strong English language skills are critical to academic success on your MBA and in your future career. The English language entry requirements listed here are the minimum scores needed for admission, successful students typically demonstrate higher levels of achievement.

A full list of acceptable English language qualifications and our required scores can be found on our detailed English language requirement page, but most applicants meet the requirement in one of the following ways:

  • IELTS (academic): A minimum score of 7.0 with minimum scores of 6.5 in all elements
  • TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 100 overall with minimum scores of 22 in all elements
  • Degree studied in and awarded by an English-speaking country

Note:

  • You may submit your online application prior to meeting the English language requirement.
  • IELTS and TOEFL scores are only valid if they are less than two years old on the programme start date.
  • The College defines English-speaking countries as: Australia, Canada, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America and West Indies.

A Tier 4 visa is not required for this programme. A short-term study visa is required for the on campus periods of the programme if you are an international student from a country outside the EU or EEA.

If you are made an offer for a place on the Global Online MBA our team will provide all the relevant visa information and guide you through the process.

The admissions process for the MBA has three main parts:

1 – Apply online

Applications for the Global Online MBA are made through our online application system, which gives you the flexibility to complete your application in your own time and save your progress. The form includes questions about you, your career and your educational history to date. You will also need to provide the following in support of your application:

You will need to provide the contact details of two referees. When you submit your form, the online application system will send an automatic reference request directly to their professional email accounts so they can submit their recommendation letter quickly and efficiently online.

Your referees should be individuals who are best placed to discuss your suitability for an MBA programme based on your performance and achievements at work, your strengths and areas for development, and your future potential – ideally including one from your current or a recent line manager.

You will need to submit electronic copies of your full degree transcripts and certificates (with English translations if necessary) for any degrees you have completed, or relevant professional qualifications.

Transcripts should include: details of all of the modules studied on the degree, your marks for each, and the overall mark, grade or classification that you achieved if you have completed your studies. If you have studied more than one degree level programme please upload a complete set of transcripts for each qualification.

Your personal statement provides an opportunity to demonstrate your suitability for the Global Online MBA programme. Typically your personal statement should be one side of A4 and include your motivations for applying to Imperial and the MBA, and any other supporting information not included elsewhere on the form that you feel will enhance your application.

You must include a full and up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) – we do not require that you use a particular format, but a CV template is available here for your convenience.

You will be asked to write two short essays (350 words each) on your future career plans, focusing on the short term (three years out from your MBA) and your longer term career goals and objectives. Your answers should demonstrate the research that you have done into your chosen career path and how the MBA will fit into your overall career trajectory, as well as an understanding of the sector or area you wish to work in and the challenges you might face, and an awareness of how to position yourself in the market.

If English is not your native language, you may be required to take an English language test (see Entry Requirements for accepted tests and required scores). You should upload a scanned copy of your English language certificate

You may submit your application form before you have obtained English language test results. Please include details if you have a planned test date on the application form and ensure that you contact the Admissions team once your score is available.

At Imperial, we give you the opportunity to submit an optional three minute video pitch in support of your application. The video pitch helps you to: consolidate your motivations for undertaking an MBA, set yourself apart from other candidates, and allows the Admissions team to hear about your experience and achievements first-hand, gain an insight into your personality and gauge if you are the right ‘fit’ for Imperial.

If you choose to prepare a video, you will need to post it on YouTube (or Youku if you are based in China) and allow us access to it by providing a private link to it on your application. There are no technical specifications and most applicants film their video pitch on a camera phone, tablet or webcam. We do not provide any strict guidelines about the content or format of the video, and you should feel free to present yourself in the style in which you are most comfortable.

To submit an application, you will need to pay an application processing fee of £100.

If you are in receipt of a Chevening Scholarship you are not required to pay the application processing fee. Please notify the Admissions team prior to submitting your application.

2 – Interviews

Your application will be reviewed and if you are successful in this part of the selection process, you will be shortlisted for the interview stage. You will be interviewed by a member of the Admissions Committee in an online interview lasting approximately 30 minutes and conducted within the published interview week dates for the application round that you have applied for.

3 – Decision

The Admissions Committee will meet to review the full applications of all candidates interviewed within the application round and confirm decisions. You will be notified of the outcome of your application by email no later than the published decision date for the application round that you have applied for.

If you are successful in the interview stage, we will make you a conditional offer of admission for the programme. You will be able to log in to our online portal to respond to your offer, view full details of your conditions and pay your 10% deposit for the programme.
