During the course of my month-long field trip to the Ivory Coast in October this year, I worked in two diagnostic hospital laboratories in Dabou town and Taabo village – please see below the link for the official report.

The presented report gives a brief outline of the clinical laboratory services in an urban and rural low-resource setting, in southern Côte d’Ivoire. It includes introductions to the two hospitals, photographs of the laboratories, overviews of sample handling and describes the different available clinical tests. In both cases, financial resources for health care services are limited, especially apparent in the rural setting of Taabo, whereby the incapacity to pay for  health care severely hinders the local population in approaching the hospital for help. Despite these shortcomings, the staff have consistently shown considerable amount of resilience and pride in their work, and continue to strive to improve their work and ultimately, under their motto:

“Doing the best we can with what we have.”
