Research Associate Dr Rocio Araceli Diaz-Chavez (Centre for Environmental Policy) has been awarded the Young Scientist Award on Environmental Issues by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) and Zhongyu Environmental Technologies Corporation. Dr Diaz-Chavez was recognised for her research related to environmental management. The award was presented at the International Symposium on Urban Futures and Human and Ecosystem Wellbeing in Shanghai by UNESCO, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and SCOPE at the end of October.

Dr Nick Voulvoulis (Environmental Policy) has been awarded the prestigious Eddy Wastewater Principles/Processes Medal by the Water Environment Federation, an international, not-for-profit, technical and educational, water quality organisation. Dr Voulvoulis was recognised for his findings recorded in the article, Removal of steroid estrogens from wastewater using granular activated carbon: comparison between virgin and reactivated carbon.

Professor Jim Skea, Research Director of the UK Energy Research Centre, based at Imperial, has received the Energy Institute’s 73rd Melchett Award for his significant contribution to the energy industry. Professor Skea also holds a Chair in Sustainable Energy (Environmental Policy). He is a Fellow of the Energy Institute and one of the UK’s leading experts in energy policy and climate change, Professor Skea received the award on 1 July at an evening reception in London, where he addressed guests and presented the Melchett Lecture. Professor Skea is a founding member of the UK Committee on Climate Change and a Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group III. The award was presented by James Smith FEI, President of the Energy Institute and Chairman of Shell UK.

A sustainable Coca-Cola bottle called ‘PlantBottle’, which was developed by Dr Richard Murphy (Life Sciences), has won a gold award for innovation and sustainability in the 22nd DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. Through Imperial Consultants, Dr Murphy, Dr Jeremy Woods (Environmental Policy) and Miss Miao Guo (Life Sciences) carried out a full life-cycle analysis of the product as part of Coca Cola’s development programme. The bottle is made by a process that turns sugar cane and molasses, a by-product of sugar production, into monoethylene glycol, which is a major component of PET plastic. The packaging is made of up to 30 per cent plant-based material and can be recycled in the existing recycling infrastructure.
