On 28 June the Department of Physics held its first Postgraduate Research Symposium, where second and third year PhD students had the opportunity to present their research to over 40 industrial guests, as well as staff and other students from the Department. Dr Andrew Williamson, Postgraduate Development Officer (Physics), reports on the day:
“The symposium began with a reception hosted by the Faculty Principal, Professor Maggie Dallman, and the Head of the Physics Department, Professor Jo Haigh, for industry representatives and the senior staff and Postgraduate Research student representatives. Professor Lesley Cohen (Physics) announced that the Department was starting an Industry Club which will strengthen the relationship with key companies and encourage them to support events put on at the College throughout the year.
The main events for the day were the presentations from the third year students, showing the breadth of research, from modelling how wind blows down the Persian Gulf to the origin of structure in the universe. At lunchtime the second year students presented posters of their work to the visitors, other students and staff.
